FEASIBILITY STUDY
West Hartford Public Library
The West Hartford Library, together with the town, the state and private sources, launched a $9 million project to enlarge and renovate the Library building. Some portion was to be raised from private sources. CCG completed a feasibility study that established a $1M goal for the private capital campaign, and exceeded the goal by $285,000. West Hartford is very proud of its new Library.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Asylum Hill Boys & Girls Club Development Association, Inc. (AHBGC)
The Asylum Hill Boys & Girls Club Development Association was created to build a $7 million Boys & Girls Club in the Asylum Hill neighborhood. CCG conducted the capital campaign, exceeding the $7 million goal and providing additional money for a playground and other non-budgeted essentials. This Boys & Girls Club in Hartford, the birthplace of the Boys & Girls movement, is state of the art and is considered their premier property, helping to entertain and educate hundreds of young people in the Asylum Hill neighborhood.
Foodshare, Inc.
Foodshare is a regional food bank that provides 12 tons of food each day to food pantries, community kitchens, emergency shelters, mobile distribution sites, and other social service organizations. CCG guided Foodshare in a $4.5 million campaign to create a new distribution center in Windsor that would accommodate the growing needs of the community. CCG conducted a feasibility study and then helped Foodshare identify campaign leadership and committees to cultivate and solicit individual, foundation and corporate prospects. With CCG’s help, Foodshare exceeded their goal by $300,000. The new distribution center is able to provide more fresh produce and staples to many more communities in the Greater Hartford area. During this economic downturn, their increased capacity has been essential for this safety net organization.
GRANT WRITING
Yale-New Haven Health Systems, Yale-New Haven Hospital
CCG was hired to devise a centralized, integrated system for writing, tracking and reporting grant proposals. This project, “Creating Synergy in Grantmaking,” was effective in assessing processes currently in place across both the System and the Hospital, identifying strengths and weaknesses in the current proposal writing process, researching best practice systems, and developing a comprehensive model and action plan for integrating grantsmanship services through both organizations. Action plan has been implemented resulting in the ability to process more grants with the same staff and a higher success rate.
ORGANIZATIONAL AND TECHNOLOGY OPTIMIZATION
The Village for Families & Children, Inc. (The Village)
CCG worked with the Village to analyze the organization, and conducted an Assessment to restructure a 7-person development and marketing department. CCG did this by assessing the fundraising needs of the organization and creating different staff positions and job descriptions within the Development Department. Using interviews with Board and staff, confidential Board surveys, and analysis of planning documents, financial statements and development materials, CCG created an organizational chart for re-staffing the department, including suggested job descriptions and a basic development plan. In addition, CCG helped The Village update its fundraising software system and database.
ENDOWMENT PLANNING
The Women & Girls’ Fund of the Main Street Community Foundation
CCG was hired in the spring of 2009 to work with a Task Force of the Advisory Board to do a Development Assessment and a Development Plan for the Women & Girls’ Fund. The Women & Girls’ Fund’s goal was to increase their endowment to $500,000 so there would be additional money to give to women and girls’ causes. The Task Force came up with workable goals and a calendar to accomplish the stepped-up fundraising plan. They also revised their organizational structure to better accomplish their mission. They are well on their way to raising the $500,000 endowment they need.
DEVELOPMENT ASSESSMENT
VNA HealthCare, Inc.
VNA HealthCare hired CCG in the fall of 2009 to conduct a Development Assessment and to fill the position of Chief Development professional. The Development Assessment analyzed the organization’s capacity to raise money, the roles and responsibilities of the Trustees and of the Development Committee, the organizational structure, and the job descriptions of the Development staff. Past fundraising plans, timelines and materials were also examined. CCG created a Development Assessment with recommendations to the Board about how to proceed. It also developed a new organizational structure and staff job descriptions.
CCG created a new job description and conducted a search for the new Vice President of Development for VNA HealthCare. The search was successful and a new Vice President of Development has been hired. VNA Healthcare is restructuring the Development Department with more of an emphasis on major and planned gifts. They have just identified over 400 major gift prospects from their database and are beginning to create deeper relationships with them.
